Morning Commuter Overview

Commuters in Albury and Wodonga should prepare for a mix of local infrastructure projects and significant changes to the regional rail network this Tuesday, 3 February 2026. While major arterial roads are currently flowing well, several long-term projects in the Thurgoona and Lavington areas continue to impact local travel times. Drivers are also reminded that school zones remain in full effect, requiring a 40km/h limit during peak drop-off and pick-up hours.

Local Roadworks and Changed Conditions

The most significant impact on local traffic remains the ongoing work on the Thurgoona Link Road. Construction for Stage 5 is currently focused on the Kerr Road area, where sewer and water trunk main installations are underway. Motorists should expect heavy vehicle movements and localized diversions in this precinct through the end of February. Additionally, preparatory works for the sewer interconnection at the Elizabeth Mitchell Drive and Corry’s Road intersection may lead to intermittent lane closures.

  • Lavington Drainage: Reconstruction works continue between Boronia Street and Tamarind Street. Demolition and excavation activities may cause minor delays for residents and through-traffic in the immediate vicinity.
  • Albury Airport: Night works are currently scheduled for the Taxiway Alpha extension. While this primarily affects airport operations between 7:00 PM and 5:00 AM, contractors and heavy machinery will be active around the airport precinct, so stay alert when traveling along airport access roads.
  • Burrows Road: Reconstruction efforts are ongoing. Commuters are advised to follow all posted detours and allow an extra five minutes if using this route to bypass central Albury.

Hume Highway and Regional Travel

For those heading north on the Hume Highway, conditions between Albury and Gundagai are currently reported as clear with no major delays. However, long-haul commuters traveling toward Sydney should be aware of significant maintenance further up the track. Major bridge work near Mittagong and resurfacing projects near Goulburn are expected to add up to 15 minutes to travel times. Contraflow arrangements and an 80km/h speed limit are in place in these zones through mid-February.

Public Transport: The 'Big Switch' Timetable

Rail commuters are reminded that V/Line’s major network overhaul, known as the "Big Switch," is now in full operation. As of Sunday, 1 February, a completely new timetable has been implemented for the Albury Line. These changes are designed to improve connectivity with Melbourne’s new Metro Tunnel services. Passengers are strongly encouraged to verify their departure and arrival times before heading to the station, as many regular services have been adjusted by several minutes to accommodate the new regional and metropolitan integration.

Safety Reminder

Police have increased their visibility across the Southern District following a series of regional incidents. Drivers are urged to maintain safe following distances and remain patient through construction zones. Pedestrians in East Albury are also advised to stay vigilant following recent reports of suspicious activity in the area.
