Public Notice: Urban Forest Strategy Adopted and Infrastructure Priority Updates

City Planning: New Urban Forest Strategy Endorsed
Albury City Councillors have officially adopted the new Urban Forest Strategy (UFS), a landmark policy designed to transform the city’s green canopy over the next decade. The strategy establishes an ambitious target of 30% urban tree canopy cover by 2050. To achieve this, the council will significantly increase its annual planting efforts, moving from 2,000 trees to over 6,000 per year. Residents are advised that an Implementation Working Group, which includes community representation, is currently being formed to oversee the rollout of cooler streets and enhanced biodiversity initiatives across both public and private lands.
Infrastructure and Traffic Management Updates
Several major infrastructure projects are impacting traffic flow across the Albury and Lavington regions this week. Commuters are advised to plan for delays at the following locations:
- Lavington Drainage Reconstruction: Significant works continue between Boronia Street and Tamarind Street. Localized diversions remain in place near the railway line as crews progress with structural shotcrete applications.
- Burrows Road Watermain: In South Albury, watermain reconstruction remains a priority. Motorists should expect temporary lane narrowing and are urged to maintain high awareness of site workers in this residential zone.
- Thurgoona Link Road: Stage 5 of the growth corridor project is active. Work is currently focused on sewer and water trunk main installations near Kerr Road.
- Hume Highway (Table Top): Ongoing infrastructure upgrades at Table Top continue to result in reduced speed limits and single-lane closures. Northbound travelers should allow for an additional ten minutes of travel time.
Public Health and Hospital Access
In coordination with Albury Wodonga Health, the public is reminded of significant access changes at the Albury Campus due to the ongoing Regional Hospital Project. Construction fencing has been relocated to accommodate the new building footprint. Public parking has been shifted to the full length of the East Street verge, and pedestrian access to the main entrance is now via a newly established designated footpath. Traffic controllers are on-site to prioritize emergency vehicle movements.
Community Consultation and Deadlines
Today, Friday 20 March, marks the final day for artists to submit Expressions of Interest for the 'Laughs in the Lane' performance series. Additionally, AlburyCity is seeking community feedback on the draft Eight Mile Creek Flood Study Review. Residents are encouraged to review the findings and provide submissions to help shape future flood mitigation strategies before the closing date of 2 April 2026. Submissions can be made in writing to the council chambers at 553 Kiewa Street.
