Critical Public Notice: Urgent Water Consumption Reduction

AlburyCity has issued an urgent appeal to all residents and local businesses to significantly reduce water usage effective immediately. This public service announcement follows a technical failure in the water network’s control system, which has severely reduced the operational capacity of the city’s water treatment plants. While the council emphasizes that the quality of the water remains safe for consumption, the speed at which it can be treated and distributed is currently compromised.

To ensure that the city maintains a reliable supply for essential needs and emergency services, residents are requested to adhere to the following conservation measures until further notice:

  • Indoor Use: Please limit showers to under four minutes and ensure that dishwashers or washing machines are only operated with full loads using 'eco' cycles.
  • Outdoor Use: All non-essential outdoor water use should be suspended. This includes the watering of lawns and gardens, the hosing of hard surfaces, and the washing of private vehicles.
  • Business Compliance: Local businesses are also encouraged to review their operations and minimize any non-critical water consumption during this recovery phase.

Council technical teams are currently working to stabilize the system and restore full capacity. While storage reservoirs have begun to refill, the network remains under pressure. AlburyCity thanks the community for their proactive support and patience as these repairs continue.

Upcoming Deadlines for Public Submissions

The community is reminded that the submission window for several significant infrastructure and planning projects will close at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, 10 February 2026. Feedback from residents is a vital component of the council's decision-making process for the following items:

  • Asher Lane Road Naming: A proposal is currently on display to name a new public thoroughfare 'Asher Lane.' The road is situated to commence at Creek Street and extend in an easterly direction.
  • Discovery Road Designation: Council intends to name a new private road within Noreuil Park as 'Discovery Road.' Community views on this naming and its impact on park navigation are welcomed.
  • Thurgoona Wirlinga Precinct Structure Plan 2025: Following an extensive period of public exhibition, the final date for submissions regarding the updated structure plan is approaching. This plan is a cornerstone for managing the long-term growth and residential development of the Thurgoona and Wirlinga areas.

Formal submissions can be lodged via email to the council’s information desk or by mail addressed to the Kiewa Street office. All received feedback will be formally considered by the council following the close of the exhibition period.

Administrative and Service Updates

AlburyCity has confirmed a transition in its executive leadership. The council resolved this week that long-serving Chief Executive Officer Frank Zaknich will not be returning to the position. Gael Evans-Barr will serve as the Acting CEO until an interim appointment is finalized by mid-February. The council remains focused on maintaining stability and delivering key community programs during this period.

In addition to leadership changes, the council is actively working to restore regional connectivity. Following the withdrawal of the QantasLink Melbourne-to-Albury flight route, the Mayor is engaging with aviation partners to secure sustainable air services for the regional economy and residents traveling for health and business purposes.
