Emergency Health Advisory: Extreme Heat and Disease Monitoring

AlburyCity and Albury Wodonga Health have issued a continuing advisory for residents regarding severe to extreme heat conditions currently impacting the border region. Temperatures are forecast to remain significantly high, with peak values expected to reach the mid-to-upper 40s. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, maintain hydration, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Public cooling centers at the Albury LibraryMuseum remain available during standard business hours.

In addition to weather-related precautions, health officials are monitoring new measles cases reported in the Victorian border districts as of early February. Residents are encouraged to ensure their vaccinations are up to date and to contact a healthcare professional if they display symptoms such as fever, cough, or a blotchy rash.

Public Works and Road Naming Proposals

Council is currently seeking community feedback on several proposed road names for new developments within the city. Under Section 162 of the Roads Act 1993, the following names are currently open for public submission:

  • Discovery Road: A proposed private road located within Noreuil Park, South Albury.
  • Asher Lane: A proposed public road commencing at Creek Street and extending in an eastern direction.
  • Dornan Lane: A proposed public road connecting Thurgoona Street and Wilcox Street.

The submission period for these proposals is active and will remain open until the close of business on Tuesday, 10 February 2026. Submissions should be addressed to the AlburyCity General Manager and can be delivered via email or post.

Infrastructure and Future Planning

The Thurgoona Wirlinga Precinct Structure Plan 2025 is now available for public viewing following its formal adoption. This plan outlines the strategic development of the precinct to support regional growth. Residents can access the full documentation via the AlburyCity website or at the Kiewa Street administrative building. Additionally, the new Albury Community Participation Plan is now in effect, providing a framework for how the community is informed and involved in local planning matters.

Community Opportunities and Public Services

Nominations are officially open for the 2026 AlburyCity Youth Council. Local residents aged 12 to 18 are encouraged to apply for one of 14 available positions, including Youth Mayor and Secretary. The program offers a platform for young people to advocate for local issues and build leadership skills. Applications close on Friday, 27 February 2026.

For residents interested in local history, the Albury LibraryMuseum is hosting a public session titled "From Albury to Florida: The Brickell Connection" today, Thursday, 5 February. This presentation explores the historical links between the local region and international settlements. No prior registration is required for this community service announcement.
