Holiday Traffic Surge for Easter Sunday

As Albury enters the first full weekend of the autumn school holidays, commuters and holidaymakers should prepare for significantly higher traffic volumes today, Sunday, 5 April 2026. With the Easter long weekend in full swing, major routes including the Hume Highway and Riverina Highway are experiencing heavy flows as travelers move between Melbourne, Sydney, and the Border North regions. Local authorities advise allowing at least 20 to 30 minutes of additional travel time for any cross-town trips.

Major Arterial and Highway Alerts

  • Hume Highway (Table Top): Ongoing infrastructure work at Table Top, north of the Albury CBD, continues to impact through-traffic. Motorists should expect reduced speed limits and potential minor queuing. While heavy construction is paused for the Easter Sunday public holiday, the work zones remain active with narrowed lanes.
  • Riverina Highway Access: Traffic remains steady through East Albury, though travelers are reminded of the high pedestrian activity near Noreuil Park and the botanical gardens for the 'Aurora in Bloom' light installation.

Local Roadworks and Diversions

Several council-led projects remain in a 'made-safe' state over the long weekend, but their associated speed restrictions and diversions are still in effect:

  • Lavington Drainage Works: Significant reconstruction continues between Boronia Street and Tamarind Street. Localized diversions remain in place near the railway line; please follow all posted signage.
  • South Albury Watermain Upgrades: Burrows Road is subject to temporary lane narrowing between Logan Road and Union Road. High awareness is required in this residential zone.
  • Thurgoona Link Road: Stage 5 works near the Kerr Road intersection are currently active. While crews are off-site today, the road surface may be uneven in sections.

Public Transport and Hospital Access

A major highlight for commuters this month is the 'Free Travel' initiative. All V/Line train and coach services across the network are free of charge from now until 30 April 2026. For those heading to Melbourne, Sunday services from Albury Station are scheduled for 6:45 AM, 12:51 PM, and 3:20 PM. Passengers are encouraged to book ahead as holiday demand is extremely high.

Finally, a reminder for those visiting the Albury Hospital campus: the Regional Hospital Project has necessitated significant parking changes. Public parking has been relocated to the East Street verge, and pedestrian access to the main entrance is via the newly designated footpath. Traffic controllers are on-site to ensure emergency vehicle priority.
