Morning Traffic and Commute Overview

Commuters across the Albury-Wodonga region should prepare for a steady but busy start to the morning this Tuesday, 31 March 2026. While the central business district remains largely clear of major gridlock, several ongoing infrastructure projects and localized diversions in the northern and southern suburbs will require extra travel time. Residents are encouraged to plan their routes in advance to avoid known work zones and ensure a smooth arrival at their destinations.

Major Local Roadworks and Suburb Impacts

Significant infrastructure upgrades continue to influence traffic flow in three key residential and growth corridors today:

  • Lavington: The major drainage reconstruction project is active between Boronia Street and Tamarind Street. Localized diversions remain in effect near the railway line as crews progress with retaining wall construction. Motorists should expect increased heavy vehicle movements and follow all signposted detours.
  • South Albury: Pavement construction is underway on Burrows Road, specifically in the section between Logan Road and Union Road. Following the recent completion of watermain works, high-activity machinery is now on-site. Temporary lane narrowing is in place, and drivers are urged to maintain high awareness for site workers in this residential zone.
  • Thurgoona: Stage 5 of the Thurgoona Link Road project remains high-activity, particularly at the Kerr Road intersection. Work on sewer and water trunk mains may cause minor delays for those traveling through the Thurgoona-Wirlinga growth corridor.

Albury Station and Pedestrian Bridge Detours

The Albury Station pedestrian footbridge remains closed as part of the ongoing Inland Rail project. Having been demolished in late 2025 to allow for double-stacked freight clearances, the bridge will not be replaced for several more months. Pedestrians and rail commuters must continue to use the established detours via the Harold Mair Bridge or the Amatex Street bridge. Rail passengers are also reminded that all V/Line and NSW TrainLink services are currently operating under the updated February 2026 timetable with no major scheduled disruptions for today.

Hume Highway and Hospital Access

For those heading north toward Sydney, be aware of regional resurfacing works on the Hume Highway. While the Table Top safety upgrades are winding down, significant work at Marulan involving 24/7 contraflow conditions continues through Wednesday, potentially adding 20 to 30 minutes for long-distance travelers. Locally, the Albury Hospital campus on East Street remains under modified parking arrangements due to the Regional Hospital Project. Construction fencing has shifted parking to the East Street verge, and traffic controllers are stationed at the carpark entry to prioritize emergency vehicle access.
