Autumn School Holidays Impact Highway Traffic

Commuters and travelers should prepare for a significant increase in traffic volumes today, Friday, 3 April 2026, marking the official start of the NSW autumn school holiday period. Major arteries, particularly the Hume Highway and Riverina Highway, are expected to see heavy congestion as families depart for the Easter break. Transport authorities are advising motorists to plan for additional travel time, especially during the afternoon peak as the holiday exodus coincides with regular Friday afternoon commutes.

Ongoing Local Roadworks and Delays

While the Hume Highway corridor between Gundagai and Albury is currently reporting no major incidents, several local infrastructure projects remain active and may cause localized delays for Albury residents:

  • Lavington Drainage Reconstruction: Major drainage upgrades continue between Boronia Street and Tamarind Street. Motorists should expect localized diversions and increased heavy vehicle movements. The work is currently focused on retaining wall construction, and traffic control is onsite to manage flow.
  • South Albury (Burrows Road): Pavement construction is entering a high-activity phase between Logan Road and Union Road. Temporary lane narrowing is in place, and drivers are urged to maintain awareness of site workers.
  • Thurgoona Link Road (Stage 5): Sewer and water trunk main installations are active near the Kerr Road intersection. Commuters in the Thurgoona-Wirlinga growth corridor should allow for minor delays during peak morning and afternoon periods.

Public Transport and Regional Rail

NSW TrainLink and V/Line services on the Albury line are currently operating to their standard Friday schedule. However, with the Sydney Royal Easter Show now underway and the start of the school holidays, services are expected to be near capacity. Passengers are strongly encouraged to pre-book regional travel and check real-time service apps for any minor adjustments to departure times. Note that a major rail maintenance period is scheduled to begin later this month, but services remain on tracks for today’s commute.

Evening Traffic and Event Parking

Residents are also reminded of the "Aurora in Bloom" light installation at the Albury Botanic Gardens, which continues tonight. The event typically increases evening traffic and demand for parking around the CBD and gardens precinct. For those flying out for the holidays, asphalt works for the Taxiway Alpha extension at Albury Airport are in their final stages; while flight schedules are unaffected, motorists should allow an extra ten minutes for terminal access and parking due to airport precinct machinery movements.
